1. Western Red Cedar: The Heritage Choice
Aesthetic Profile: Cedar delivers a striking, high-contrast visual palette, ranging from warm ambers and deep reddish-browns to pale straw tones — an instantly recognizable, rustic or transitional luxury look.
Thermal Performance: Cedar's porous, low-density cellular structure means it absorbs heat slowly, keeping benches and backrests comfortable to the touch even at high ambient temperatures.
Aroma & Natural Resilience: Cedar contains natural oils and compounds (thujaplicins) that give it its signature woodsy aroma and contribute to natural resistance to moisture, rot, and warping in high-humidity environments.
2. Canadian Hemlock: The Modernist Choice
Aesthetic Profile: Hemlock is prized for its visual uniformity — a clean, light-blonde to tan palette with a straight, fine grain and minimal knots, pairing well with glass fronts and matte-black hardware.
Structural Durability: Hemlock is denser and harder than cedar, giving it strong scratch resistance — a practical advantage in high-traffic commercial studios or gym facilities.
Neutrally Scented: Unlike cedar, hemlock is essentially non-aromatic and low in natural resin, releasing little to no scent under heat. This makes it a strong choice for scent-sensitive clientele or residential spaces where a neutral atmosphere is preferred. (We describe hemlock as low-scent rather than "hypoallergenic" — individual sensitivities vary, and we'd rather be precise than make a medical claim we can't back up.)
